The Missile Silo and “The Girl!” (Part 1)

Dogg and I found a little Toyota that started right up after a spray of starting fluid. Most cars were dead on arrival as we checked them. It was in a garage and the gas tank was full. I also got a tool chest full of tools and some spare parts. I don’t think the owners will miss the car anymore, so we borrowed it for the next few days…

The road to the silo was clear and easy going. Being a city so high in the sky, plants grow but not as prevalent as if you are at sea level or such. It was rather aired in this part of Colorado and hence everything was easy to see and travel around. It took about 4 hours to get to the drive that led to the missile silo. It was as I expected to be locked and a perimeter fence that was still in very good shape. Only thing missing was guards to keep unwanted Stykers and Doggs out… πŸ™‚

I decided to just cut the locks off the front gate and then re-chain it after we got in. I was watching several Zombies sniffing the air as they shuffled about in the distance. It seems that a Zombie can almost smell as good as a dog can smell and that is a bad thing. You could see the Zombies going in circles as they were confused as to what they were smelling. It has been a long time since Zombies had flesh and brains to eat around most parts of the world…

Then as they (Zombies) finally got their bearings and started to slowly shuffle towards Dogg and I. We got the gate open and closed it against wandering Zombies. Then we started up the long drive of asphalt to the silos. As I walked I was thinking back to my younger years and was remembering when I spent 6 months in a Titan Missile Silo as I was in the Army and a Nuclear Specialist! They were great living and back then we had 8-track cassettes and we had every movie on earth known at the time to watch. I remember that we had to smack the VCR on the side to get it to start playing, but it always played. It is interesting what memories stand out as you go through life…

We came upon another gate and that I knew was the gate to the immediate vicinity of the silos…

This gate was open?

I could just see the two concrete/steel caps to the silos and as Dogg and I crept closer to the first guard shack inside the complex, we saw what looked like human activity. There was clothes on a line, a chair sitting by a door, a bicycle and other such items of signs of a human living here. This did not mean that anyone was here alive but someone had determinately survived here for at least awhile…

Then my world went black as I hit the ground knocked out face first…

I remember waking up and the first thing I saw was Dogg curled up in the lap of a woman who was scratching Dogg behind the ears. They were watching a movie on a small TV and I remember seeing Rambo blowing up everything on the screen of the TV. Dogg was also eating treats and it looked like he was having a good time. I thought to myself what a traitor Dogg is. He fell for the first pretty face that came along…

I set up and moaned as the two TV watchers looked at me. The girl just stared as so did Dogg. I am sure Dogg was waiting to see what kind of grouchy mood I would be in after being hit on the head. The woman had a look of almost scared, but curiousness behind her eyes. I have to say that I better be good because she could have killed me easily as I was knocked out. So I just said, Uhhhhhhhhhhh my head!

Right then on the little TV, Rambo was shooting the police station into tiny pieces. That made me realize that it was Rambo 1. The sound did not make my head feel any better…

I looked at Dogg and said out-loud, “So you got a new friend! What you could not warn me someone was going to smack me!” Dogg looked at the floor and the girl said that she was sorry and don’t blame my doggy! He just knows good girl when he sees one and she smiled…

Well at that I had to just stop being grouchy. I realized that I had stumbled across a living, breathing human and at least she was pleasant to look at. It was also obvious that she could take care of herself as she sneaked up on me, “The great Zombie Hunter!”

I will ignore the fact that Dogg could have at least said, “Bow Wow” as in look your head is getting bashed, by a pretty girl…

I will finish this tomorrow because my head really hurts and I want to be able to communicate properly to you about what the girl told me. The girl does not have a name as she can not remember it from trauma a long time ago. So I call her “Girl” – well she is less than half my age, so she is a girl and she likes that name. She said it is simple and easy. Then she took Doggs paw and shook it and said, “Hi Dogg, my name is Girl!” Dogg went “Bow Wow”…

So now he can say “Bow Wow” traitor…

PS: Girl had gotten all the stuff out of the car and that is why I have my laptop to write this. I am going to recharge the batteries tonight. I found it interesting that Girl had never seen a laptop before. She had seen desktop computers but did not know what Internet was or what a computer was for. I have an interesting story to tell you that she told me, but that is tomorrow…
